Spent a couple of hours on my mountain bike today on my favourite blast from home up to Werneth Low a ride of just over 17 miles. It’s a great ride that’s mostly off road and follows the Trans Pennine bridleway from Stockport to Hyde and climbs mostly gently (other than the climb from Haughton Green to Gee Cross) to Mottram Old Road then gets steep and rough in the final climb up to the war memorial on the top of Werneth Low.
The day started with a puncture repair and a tyre swap as the front had more tread left so thought I’d see if it improved the climbs.
Also thought I’d try out my new iPhone app to measure the route (cyclemeter) and it’s created all the data below. It’s not a bad app and has some great features but the Kinetic GPS is better including a better interface with Dailymile.
The ride was great, muddy on the tracks, no horses and only a couple of dog walkers to get in the way. The traction of the rear tyre was much improved and span less on muddy bits but the front slid more – time for new tyres I think!
Managed to do the steep climb under the railway line and peak forest canal without stopping, which is a first!
Didn’t manage to do all of the 2nd climb up to the memorial without stopping, but didn’t walk any of it.
Had a great blast back, fast and full of puddles and mud and downhill nearly all the way.
Did all this as usual without mishap despite some slipping front wheel, heart stopping, moments and then just a few hundred yards from home on a tarmacced bike path I managed to fall off at an anti car/motorbike gate because I was in the wrong gear and couldn’t get my feet out of the pedals!
